    China's PCT international patent applications ranked third in the world last year

    According to the latest data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the number of PCT international patent applications in my country has jumped to the third place in the world last year. In 2013, the number of international patent applications submitted by my country through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) reached 21,516, exceeding 20,000 for the first time, a year-on-year increase of 15.6%. Relevant experts said that PCT international patent application has become a yardstick to test my country's independent innovation capability. In recent years, the continuous and rapid growth of my country's PCT international patent applications reflects the improvement of the quality of Chinese enterprises' international operation and the improvement of market-oriented competitiveness.

    Plenum focuses on intellectual property rights

    Thirty-five years after setting off on the reform and opening-up path, China has reiterated the importance of protecting intellectual property rights (IPR) and encouraging innovation in its plans for the national economy and society. The Third Plenary Session of the 18th Communist Party of China Central Committee issued a document on Nov 15, saying that IPR and innovation, among other areas, will be in focus in the coming years. The plenum also said that China would consider setting up a special IPR court, which would be an important development and show the importance the country's leaders attach to the effective protection of IPR.

    Internationally renowned brands face difficulties with unregistered Chinese trademarks

    This is not news, but a repeat of the trademark battle that international famous brands have encountered in China. Hermes International, the owner of the internationally renowned luxury brand "HERMES (Hermes)", applied for registration of an English trademark in my country in 1977, but has not registered a corresponding Chinese trademark for a long time. In 2009, when Hermès International discovered that the Chinese translation of its trademark "Hermes" was registered by Guangdong Shunde Dafeng Garment Co., Ltd. and requested to be revoked, it was rejected by the Trademark Review and Adjudication Board of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (hereinafter referred to as the Trademark Review and Adjudication Board), and then the court of first instance. The judgment upholds the ruling of the Trademark Review and Adjudication Board.

    2,510 Cases of Patent Disputes were Accepted and Heard in 2012 in China

    The statistics shows that in 2012, intellectual property authorities in China accepted and heard a total of 2,510 patent disputes, with a year-on-year increase of 70% or 919 cases, 2232 cases of which were patent infringement disputes, with a year-on-year increase of 77.5% or 946 cases, and 278 cases of which were other patent disputes, with a year-on-year increase of 929.6% or 251 cases; 6512 false patent marking cases were investigated and handled, with a year-on-year increase of 4808 cases or 282%; the total number of cases handled was 9022, with a year-on-year increase of 6005 cases or 199%.

    China strengthens the training of international intellectual property talents

    "In the field of intellectual property rights in my country, there is a shortage of talents of all types, especially high-level talents with a complex knowledge structure, familiar with international affairs and international rules, with an international vision and strategic thinking." At the graduation ceremony of high-level talent training and experience exchange meeting, Tian Lipu, director of the State Intellectual Property Office, said that my country adds 30% of patent examination cases every year.
