Beijing IP Court Handled over 200,000 Cases in 10 years

Beijing Intellectual Property Court has handled more than 200,000 cases since its establishment, endeavoring to promote technological innovation, improve industrial governance and maintain the market fairness, according to a report.

The report issued by the court on Wednesday showed that between Nov 6, 2014, the establishment of the court, and October this year, it handled 201,984 IP lawsuits, of which over 130,000 were related to trademarks, with an average annual increase of 16.27 percent.

As one of the courts specializing in tackling IP disputes in China, it was established to strengthen judicial protection of IP rights and conduct judicial reform in this field, the report said.

While handling civil and administrative IP cases across the capital, the Beijing IP Court is also responsible for hearing administrative lawsuits involving the authorization and confirmation of patent, trademark, new plant varieties, and integrated circuit diagram designs throughout the country, it said.

Additionally, the court handles anti-monopoly administrative cases brought by the anti-monopoly law enforcement departments of the State Council, China's cabinet, as well as civil and administrative disputes related to drug patents nationwide, it added.

In the past decade, the court has not only attached importance to patent disputes to stimulate innovation in the technological area, but also to focus more on anti-monopoly cases to optimize the market rules, it said.

It added that the court will continue such strong legal support in the IP field, with greater efforts to educate talent and make the IP protection in line with international standards.
