    Commissioner Shen Changyu Visited WIPO Office in China

    On January 8, 2019, Commissioner Shen Changyu of China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) visited the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Office in China (WOC) and held a meeting with Director Chen Hongbing of WOC. Shen Changyu remarked that WOC carried out a large number of fruitful work and provided strong support for the development of China's IP cause in the past year; hopefully in the future, CNIPA and WOC may continue to strengthen cooperation, and provide stronger supports to the innovative development of China's economy. CNIPA will continue to provide supports from all aspects to WOC as always. Chen Hongbing thanked for the strong supports of CNIPA, and expressed his wish to further expand cooperation field with CNIPA and make contribution to the IP cause of China and the world.

    SIPO: Taking strong measures against low quality patent application

    IPR Daily Guide: Recently, the SIPO Party Leadership Group held a conference to discuss implementation of President Xi Jinping’s directives to strengthen IP protection as well as the central government’s policy to achieve stable and continuous development, to study new developments and to improve the quality of patent projects, and to put policy measures in place to further improve patent quality. The conference emphasized taking strong measures against low quality applications, targeting key fields and geographical areas, increasing regulatory efforts, putting together typical cases of abnormal patent application and disciplining applicants according to the law, as well as transferring suspected illegal acts to public security organs for investigation.

    Revised Regulations on Patent Commissioning To be enacted Mar. 1, 2019

    Revised Regulations on Patent Commissioning has been approved Executive Meetings of the State Council to be enacted on March 1, 2019. Revisions made to the Regulations include: the title of patent agent is modified as “Patent Attorney”; and the market access of patent agency is expanded.

    Global Innovation Index 2018: China Cracks Top 20

    China broke into the world's top 20 most-innovative economies as Switzerland retained its number-one spot in the Global Innovation Index (GII) ranking published annually by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).     First Release of Statistics for Patents, Trademarks and Geographical Indications from the State Intellectual Property Office

    On July 10, 2018, the State Intellectual Property Office (hereinafter referred to as the SIPO) held a regular press conference for the 3rd quarter of 2018 in Beijing. It is understood that this is the third press conference held by the SIPO this year, and that it is also the first time that the SIPO releases statistics for patents, trademarks and geographical indications to the public since it has been reconstructed. The journalists learned from the press conference that in the first half of 2018, China’s major intellectual property indicators achieved rapid growth and showed a good development momentum, in which the number of patent applications for invention and the number of granted patents in China rose to 751,000 and 217,000 respectively, and the number of registration of trademark applications was 3.586 million as well as 10 new applications for products protected by geographical indications were accepted.
