WIPO China Office was Established in Beijing

China office of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was established in Beijing on July 10. WIPO Director General Francis Gurry said that the establishment was a milestone for China to get deeply involved in the world's intellectual property system. He also expressed his appreciation for China's achievements in international patent application submitted by way of Patent Cooperation Treaty.

8th annual meeting on co-operation with EPO member states

The EPO and the national patent offices of the EPO member states including its extension states met in Crete on 12/13 June to discuss how to advance co-operation in order to improve the quality and efficiency of the European patent system, and thus better serve inventors and industry. The 8th annual meeting on co-operation was hosted by the Hellenic Industrial Property Organisation and attracted a record number of attendees, including representatives of 38 national patent offices, in addition to the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) in an observer capacity.

China's new PCT international patent application system goes online

A few days ago, China's PCT international patent application international phase examination and process management system (referred to as CE-PCT system) was officially launched. Patent applicants can submit relevant documents in the international phase of PCT international patent applications through the CE-PCT electronic application website and the PCT-SAFE electronic application software.

China's PCT international patent applications ranked third in the world last year

According to the latest data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the number of PCT international patent applications in my country has jumped to the third place in the world last year. In 2013, the number of international patent applications submitted by my country through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) reached 21,516, exceeding 20,000 for the first time, a year-on-year increase of 15.6%. Relevant experts said that PCT international patent application has become a yardstick to test my country's independent innovation capability. In recent years, the continuous and rapid growth of my country's PCT international patent applications reflects the improvement of the quality of Chinese enterprises' international operation and the improvement of market-oriented competitiveness.

Plenum focuses on intellectual property rights

Thirty-five years after setting off on the reform and opening-up path, China has reiterated the importance of protecting intellectual property rights (IPR) and encouraging innovation in its plans for the national economy and society. The Third Plenary Session of the 18th Communist Party of China Central Committee issued a document on Nov 15, saying that IPR and innovation, among other areas, will be in focus in the coming years. The plenum also said that China would consider setting up a special IPR court, which would be an important development and show the importance the country's leaders attach to the effective protection of IPR.
